The Manor House

On 28,000 hectares of malaria-free Karoo wilderness near Graaff-Reinet — reached in 20 minutes by light aircraft or two and a half hours from Port Elizabeth — The Manor House at Samara is one of the most complete and carefully conceived private safari experiences in South Africa. Booked exclusively for up to eight guests, it combines the intimacy and comfort of a private home with the full resources of one of the country's most celebrated game reserves, where lion were reintroduced in 2018 after a 180-year absence and cheetah conservation has become a cause of international renown.
Four suites — two kings and two twins — each with a free-standing bath, separate shower, air-conditioning, and a private patio overlooking the mountain landscape, accommodate guests in surroundings of understated, deeply considered elegance. Glass double doors flanked by beaded African artwork and Karoo antiques draw the eye immediately to the 21-metre infinity pool, which descends into a natural waterhole where elephant, plains game, and predators come to drink in the early morning and late afternoon — one of those views that makes every other concern irrelevant. The daily programme is entirely your own. Twice-daily game drives, guided bush walks, cheetah tracking on foot, moonlit night drives, and active participation in the reserve's conservation work can all be arranged precisely as you wish.
